Best Schools in Karachi: A Parent’s Guide
Karachi has no official school ranking, so the best school is the one that fits your child’s curriculum, budget and commute. This guide covers nine widely recognized schools with verifiable official websites: Karachi Grammar School, Karachi American School, Habib Public School, The City School, Beaconhouse, Foundation Public School, Happy Home School, Bay View Academy and Mama Parsi Girls’ Secondary School. Fees and admission dates change every year, so confirm them with each school before you apply.
How we chose these schools
This is an editorial shortlist, not an official ranking. No credible published methodology ranks Karachi schools, so we did not rank them.
Schools were included when they met three tests:
- They appear repeatedly in independent Karachi school guides.
- They have an official website with admissions information.
- Their curriculum and grade levels could be checked against the school’s own pages or a Cambridge or British Council partner list.
In this guide, best means a good fit between a school’s curriculum, campus location, grade range and admission process and your family’s needs. It does not mean the highest exam results, because we did not verify results.
Limits of this research. The research used web search results, including official school pages. We have not visited any campus or spoken to any school. Fees are not listed in the table because we could not verify current fee schedules from official pages; third-party fee figures vary and go out of date. Campus lists change, so check the school’s campus page before you apply.
Top schools in Karachi at a glance
Schools are listed alphabetically, not by quality. Fees are left out on purpose because current fee schedules could not be verified; ask each school for its latest schedule.

School profiles
Karachi Grammar School (KGS)
KGS was founded in 1847 as the Anglo-Indian School and is a private, co-educational, selective day school. describes it as serving about 2,400 students aged 3 to 19 across three sites. Its official admissions pages list separate entry points: Nursery, Year III (Junior Section), Year VII (Middle Section), Year X (College Section) and first-year A Level.
The school publishes its own admission notices and an online portal, so check kgs.edu.pk for the current round. Entry points are limited, so families who miss a window may wait a year. Best for: families seeking a Cambridge pathway from Nursery through A Level who can plan around fixed entry years.
Karachi American School (KAS)
KAS offers an English-language American college-preparatory programme with Advanced Placement courses, from Pre-Nursery to Grade 12, according to its official fast facts. The school states it has a selective admissions policy, and its admissions page says placement uses a writing sample, previous grades and recommendation letters. It is on KDA Scheme 1, Amir Khusro Road.
The school says it was founded to serve American and other expatriate children. Best for: families who want a US-style curriculum, including returning or relocating families. Local fee figures online are inconsistent, so request the current schedule directly.
Habib Public School (HPS)
HPS is on Moulvi Tamizuddin Khan Road. Its admissions page says schooling begins at Grade One for children aged 5.5 to 6.5 years, and the campus covers nearly 18 acres with a swimming pool, an astroturf and an auditorium-gymnasium. Habib Public High School is affiliated with AKU-EB and offers Class XI and XII. The school describes its admissions as merit-based and mentions confidential financial aid.
Best for: families seeking entry at Grade 1 or Class XI, and those who may need financial aid. Note that entry begins at Grade 1, not earlier.
The City School
The City School was established in Karachi in 1978 and is one of Pakistan’s largest private school networks, per British Council Insight. Its Karachi campuses appear on the British Council’s partner school list, including PECHS, Gulshan, North Nazimabad, Darakhshan and Johar. Programmes reported for the network include Matric and Cambridge O and A Level, but these vary by campus.
Best for: families who want a campus close to home. Because quality and offerings differ by campus, judge the specific campus, not the brand.
Beaconhouse School System
Beaconhouse began in 1975 as Les Anges Montessori Academy in Lahore and now runs many campuses, including several in Karachi (see its official site). Third-party sources report programmes from early years to Matric, Cambridge O Level and IGCSE, A Level and IB. A Beaconhouse PECHS listing shows the IB Diploma. Not every campus offers every level.
Best for: families who value a progression pathway within one network. Check which campus offers your child’s target stage.
Foundation Public School (FPS)
FPS was established in 1981 with 12 students and now has 11 campuses across Karachi and Hyderabad, per its official contact page. It describes itself as a private O and A Level institution. Its admission form lists entry from Pre-I through Grade X, O-I to O-III, FSc, ICS, ICom, FA and A Level, and it is affiliated with FBISE and Cambridge (third-party summary). The school says its admissions are highly competitive.
Best for: families who want either a federal board or Cambridge route within one system.
Happy Home School (HHS)
HHS runs several Karachi campuses. The Clifton campus page lists Pre-Nursery to Class XI, with Cambridge O Level and an AKU-EB Matric stream. It lists a computer lab, auditorium, music and art rooms and school health services. The school says admission is on merit after an admission test and interview.
Best for: families who want a choice between a Cambridge and a Matric stream in the same school system.
Bay View Academy
Bay View was established in 1990 and has campuses in Defence Phase VIII, Clifton (opened 2013) and PECHS (opened 2015), per its history page. It is registered with the University of Cambridge for O Level. Its admissions pages show entry points at Class III, Class VII and Class X, and say admission is based solely on merit using a test and previous school reports. Class VII and X registration for all campuses is held at the Defence Campus, and campus transfer requests are not entertained.
Best for: families aiming for O Level who can plan around the fixed entry years and campus assignment.
Mama Parsi Girls’ Secondary School
Founded on 1 April 1918, Mama Parsi is a girls’ school on M.A. Jinnah Road. Its official notice says Class II onward applications are invited in the last week of April, and entrance test dates are shared only if a vacancy arises. Best for: families looking for a girls-only school with a long history and an in-city location. Seats are limited.
Choosing by pathway
Cambridge O Level and A Level
Schools in this guide that list a Cambridge route include Karachi Grammar School, Bay View Academy, Happy Home School, Foundation Public School, The City School and Beaconhouse. Cambridge provision differs by campus, and some campuses stop at O Level. If A Level matters, ask where your child would sit AS and A Level. Bay View’s official history mentions Southshore College, set up in 2004 with two other institutions for A Level study. To check whether a school is a registered Cambridge centre, use Cambridge International’s official school search.
Matric and Intermediate
Matric (SSC) and Intermediate (HSSC) are board-based pathways. Among these schools, Happy Home School lists an AKU-EB Matric stream at its Clifton campus. Habib Public High School is affiliated with AKU-EB for Class XI. Foundation Public School’s admission form lists FSc, ICS, ICom and FA stages. Ask each school which board it uses, because the board decides the exam, syllabus and university recognition route.
Affordable options
We could not verify current fees, so this guide cannot name the cheapest school. Instead, use these approaches:
- Ask for the full yearly cost, not only monthly tuition: admission, annual and exam fees, uniform, transport and books.
- Ask whether financial aid exists. Habib Public School’s official page describes confidential financial aid.
- Compare a nearby campus of a large network with a distant single-campus school, because commute costs add up.
- Treat any fee figure on third-party sites as an estimate and confirm it with the school.
Age groups
| Stage | What to check |
|---|---|
| Nursery to Class II | Whether the school takes children at this entry point. KGS lists Nursery admission, while Habib Public School starts at Grade One. |
| Primary and middle (Class III to VIII) | Fixed entry years. KGS lists Year III and Year VII, and Bay View lists Class III and Class VII. |
| O Level or Matric (Class IX to XI) | The exam board and whether the school has a seat at Class X. KGS and Bay View list Year X or Class X entry. |
| A Level or Intermediate | Whether the school offers it on the same campus. Habib Public High School lists Class XI entry, and KGS lists first-year A Level entry. |
School selection checklist
Use this list to compare two or three shortlisted campuses.
- Total cost: yearly tuition, admission, annual, exam, uniform, books and transport
- Distance and commute: travel time at school hours, not on a free road
- Transport: whether the school runs buses or you need a private van
- Class size: the actual number in your child’s grade
- Teaching quality: teacher qualifications, turnover and how progress is reported
- Safety: gate security, supervision, health room and emergency procedures
- Learning support: whether it helps children with learning differences
- Activities: sports, arts, clubs and competitions your child will actually use
- Curriculum fit: the board or exam route through to the final year, and where the next stage is offered
- Campus assignment: whether you can choose your campus, since Bay View, for example, says campus transfers are not entertained
How to verify fees and admissions
- Open the school’s own admissions page and note the session it covers. Notices from past years stay online.
- Check the entry class, age eligibility, test or interview steps, required documents and the application window.
- Email or call the admissions office listed on that page and ask for the current fee schedule in writing.
- Ask what is included and what is extra, and whether fees rise each year.
- Treat third-party admission sites as leads only. Several list dates from many years ago.
Frequently asked questions
There is no single best school or official ranking. The right school depends on curriculum, budget, location and your child’s entry stage.
Karachi Grammar School, Bay View Academy, Happy Home School, Foundation Public School, The City School and Beaconhouse all list Cambridge routes. Confirm this for the specific campus.
Happy Home School lists an AKU-EB Matric stream at Clifton, and Foundation Public School lists FBISE-affiliated stages. Other schools may too, so ask each campus.
Mama Parsi Girls’ Secondary School is a girls’ school. KGS, KAS and most others listed here are co-educational or vary by campus. We have not verified a boys-only option in this guide.
We could not verify current fees from official pages. Ask the school for its written fee schedule for the session you plan to join.
It depends on the school and the class. KGS and Bay View publish round-specific notices, and Mama Parsi invites Class II onward applications in the last week of April. Check the official page for the current year.
Often yes, but not always. Bay View says it assigns campuses and does not allow transfers between them.
No. Large networks have many campuses with different programmes, so judge the campus your child would attend.
Conclusion: build your shortlist
Start with your child’s entry class and the curriculum you want, then narrow to two or three campuses within a realistic commute. Visit if you can, ask for the written fee schedule, and note each school’s application window so you do not miss it.
